The IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library Family
The IBM Magstar 3494 Tape Library is an automated tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability to customer data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable, modular design allows the 3494 to grow as your business grows. Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated tape library with up to 66 physical tape drives, 128 virtual tape drives, and up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can be either the IBM 3490E or the high-capacity, high-performance IBM Magstar 3590 tape drives, or a mix of both. The 3494 supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including S/390, RS/6000, AS/400, UNIX, Windows NT, SUN, and HP.
Also available are unique optional features such as the 3494 High Availability model and the IBM Magstar 3494 Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The 3494 High Availability model provides a second tape cartridge accessor and library manager for higher library availability and performance. The IBM 3494 VTS uniquely combines the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation of the 3494 to create an industry-leading self-contained hierarchical storage management subsystem. All this plus remote console support, SNMP management capabilities, multi-host attachment, and modular design make the 3494 flexible, easy to use, and the best choice in automated tape library solutions.
Model Abstract 3494-B16
The 3494-B16, an integrated Seascape (TM) solution, provides a hierarchical storage management system to attached ESCON* hosts by integrating IBM Magstar 3590 tape drives, fault tolerant RAID disk storage and a RISC based controller. It appears to host systems as two fully configured 3490E tape subsystems. The 3494-B16 contains 400 tape cartridge storage cells.
The 3494-B16 must be integrated with a 3494-L12 drive unit and attached to IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12 or 3494-L14.
Model Abstract 3494-B18
The IBM 3494-B18 Magstar Virtual Tape Server, a second generation Seascape solution, provides improved performance and capacity to lower the total cost of ownership for tape processing. IBM`s Magstar Virtual Tape Server, the industry`s first cartridge system tape based virtual tape system, is a revolutionary product exploiting the advanced performance, capacity, and data integrity of the Magstar 3590 Tape Drive, IBM`s industry leading tape technology. The Magstar 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server, when attached to an associated 3494-D12 and its integrated Magstar 3590-B1A or 3590-E1A Tape Drives, provides an enhanced version of the Magstar Virtual Tape Server.
The Magstar 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server is packaged as a stand alone unit that can be a maximum of 14 meters from the associated 3494 drive unit frame. The 3494-B18 contains a new RISC processor, host attachment of two standard ESCON channels, and up to 288 GB of tape volume cache. The ESCON High Performance Option (EHPO) provides two enhanced ESCON host channel attachments with data compression for improved performance and effective cache capacities of up to 864 GB (assuming 3:1 compression). Two additional enhanced ESCON host channel attachments can also be specified. A Magstar 3494 Tape Library can now be configured with up to two Virtual Tape Servers. Virtual configurations have also been enhanced to provide a maximum of 64 virtual devices and up to 150,000 logical volumes per 3494. Each virtual volume can now have a maximum capacity of 2.4 GB (assuming 3:1 compression).
Model Abstract 3494-D10
The 3494-D10 supports the IBM 3490E Magnetic Subsystem models 3490-C1A, 3490-C2A and 3490-F1A. The 3494-D10 can contain zero or one 3490E tape drive unit (3490-C1A or 3490-C2A) or up to two 3490-F1A Tape Drives and 400 or 300 tape cartridge storage cells.
The 3494-D10 must be attached to IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12 or 3494-L14.
Model Abstract 3494-D12
The 3494-D12 supports the IBM Magstar Tape Subsystem 3590-E1A or 3590-B1A and is designed to grow as your storage and tape drive needs grow. The base configuration of no tape drive unit and 400 tape cartridge storage cells can be expanded with up to a total o f six tape drive units and 250 tape storage cells.
The 3494-D12 must be attached to a IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12, or 3494-L14. The 3494-D12 with three, four, five or six Magstar 3590 tape drives, can be integrated with a 3494-B16 or 3494-B18 Virtual Tape Server to provide an ESCON attached hierarchical storage management system.
Model Abstract 3494-D14
The 3494-D14 can contain one 3590-A60, 3590-A50, or 3590-A00 Controller and up to four Magstar 3590-E1A or four 3590-B1A Tape Drives and is designed to grow as your storage and tape drive needs grow. The base configuration of no tape drive unit and 400 tape cartridge storage cells can be expanded with up to a total of four tape drive units and 305 tape storage cells.
The 3494-D14 must be attached to a IBM Magstar Tape Library Models 3494-L10, 3494-L12, or 3494-L14.
